Road Closure - Monnow Street

Published: 23 June 2020

Following the First Ministers announcement on Friday 19th June that non-essential shops in Wales could reopen from Monday 22nd June, it was essential for Monmouthshire County Council to act fast and provide emergency precautionary measures to not only support this decision, but also allow people to return to our town centres safely, whilst maintaining social distance.

Within Monmouth, it has been necessary for the Authority to arrange for

  1. Monnow Street from its junction with Monnow Keep to its junction with St Johns Street to be closed (except for deliveries); and

  2. St John Street from its junction with Glendower Street to its junction with Monnow Street to be closed (except for access) as shown in drawing No. Monmouth-02

to enable pedestrians and cyclists to move freely within the town, queue outside shops (should they need to) and above all else stay safe.

The emergency order will remain in operation for a period of 21 days in order to allow the Authority to assess the effectiveness of the measures, with a view to provide this on a more permanent basis, albeit as a temporary order which can last up to a maximum period of 18-months.
